Kai Havertz had ‘awful luck’ coming impossibly close three times before scoring

Kai Havertz could barely believe his luck on Tuesday evening.

He struck the inside of the post and saw the ball fly across the face, had a goal chalked off for a marginal offside, and missed a penalty – all before finally scoring.

After his two first-half incidents in front of goal, one Chelsea fan posted on social media: "Two Havertz goals not working out??? His luck is awful, f***ing hell".

The German's afternoon wasn't over, though, and he was handed a golden opportunity to find the net from the spot. Havertz was able to send the Borussia Dortmund keeper the wrong way, but his shot rattled the post.

And as Havertz resided to the fact he'd missed another golden chance, VAR brought the game back for encroachment. This time Havertz didn't fluff his lines, burying the ball into the same corner he'd initially aimed for.

Chelsea fans rallied around Havertz despite him missing numerous chances: "Kai Havertz in big games is that guy. If you don’t know get to know!"

"This Kai Havertz performance is going in history don’t backtrack on him," a second added. While a third tweeted: "Havertz is built for the Champions League. He's a different breed when it comes to massive games!"

And a fourth added: "I've been waiting 2 years for a Havertz performance like this man!"

Chelsea were the better side in Germany, and Graham Potter's men would have felt as though they deserved something more from their performance.

The Blues started in a similar fashion on Tuesday evening, with Havertz squandering numerous chances before he finally tucked the ball home from the spot.

Havertz's goal came after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring before half time.
