Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that his players are likely to be short on confidence by drawing similarities with Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been forced to settle for a place on the bench at Manchester United on a regular basis this season. The Reds have only managed to win two of their seven Premier League games since the beginning of the campaign and were held to a frustrating 3-3 draw by Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
The Seagulls had Leandro Trossard to thank for securing a welcome point at Anfield by leaving it late to complete a stunning hat-trick despite the Reds having recovered from two goals down to lead with only a few minutes remaining. Klopp reflected on the disappointment of Liverpool’s poor form in Monday’s press conference by explaining that his players, like Ronaldo, are lacking confidence and will continue to do so until they eventually manage to stop the rot.
“Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment is at the top of his confidence? It happens to all of us,” the German coach told reporters. “Lionel Messi last season, pretty much the same. You have to take a step in the right direction and when you’re ready, it’s back.
“In individual sports you can fight yourself through it. In team sport, you have to do it together. It can be more complicated.”

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will finally be able to gain some much-needed winning momentum with victory over Rangers in their next outing in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday evening. Klopp went on to insist that he will continue to do his best to turn things around for the Reds over the coming weeks after enduring their worst start to a season since Brendan Rodgers was at the helm.
“Had we won the Brighton game it would have been a different feeling but with similar problems,” he added. “We have to do pretty much everything better.
“It was only two years ago we were in a similar situation when we lost all our centre-halves but we found a way out by working on it. That’s what we will do this time.
“We realised after [losing to] Napoli it was a low point and we had to change things quickly. We didn’t play Wolves, played Ajax, then didn’t play Chelsea and couldn’t keep up anything from the Ajax win. Then we played Brighton, a really good team and conceded two early goals.
“When you spot a problem and think you have the solution and you expect the solution to be instant and influential. That’s in football never the case.”
