Jurgen Klopp sends transfer message to Liverpool chiefs after Spurs win
Jurgen Klopp has pleaded with Liverpool chiefs to deliver him a new centre-back before the transfer window slams shut next week.
Klopp’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 but were dealt two fresh injury setbacks in defensive areas.
Fabinho was ruled out of the clash with an injury and Joel Matip suffered ankle ligament damage in the first half.
While goals from Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane secured three points for the Reds and saw them climb back into the Champions League spots, their defensive injury crisis has reached a new low.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both long-term absentees and Matip struggling to prove his fitness, Klopp has largely been restricted to using Fabinho at the heart of the defence along with one of Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips or Jordan Henderson.
Liverpool ended Thursday night’s win over Spurs with Henderson and Phillips at the back but Klopp thinks the time has come for the club to dive into the transfer market and deliver a centre-half.
‘You can imagine that we think about everything,’ Klopp said in his post-match press conference.
‘Of course, we thought the whole time, we think the whole time. It’s about doing the right thing.
‘I’m not picky or whatever but we need to find the right player.
‘We have players still, not a lot to be honest in the defence line. It’s incredible what’s happening, really incredible. But yeah, that’s it.’
