Jurgen Klopp insists Fabio Carvalho has done 'nothing wrong'

‘We needed different skills’: Jurgen Klopp insists Fabio Carvalho has done ‘nothing wrong’ as he explains youngster’s lack of first team football

  • Liverpool signed Fabio Carvalho for a fee around £5m in the summer
  • The youngster featured in 11 of their first 13 Premier League matches
  • He has played just three minutes of Premier League football since the World Cup

Jurgen Klopp has addressed Fabio Carvalho’s lack of first team football, insisting that it is no fault of the player.

The Reds signed Carvalho for a fee in the region of £5m in the summer after he played a starring role for Fulham on their path to winning the Championship last season.

He featured in 11 of their first 13 Premier League games but has played in just one of the following 10, a three-minute cameo against Southampton.

The 20-year-old hasn’t even made the squad in two of their last three games and fans were starting to think Klopp has lost faith.

Speaking about the situation, Klopp said in a press conference: ‘Fabio is a very young player, big talent, absolutely.

Fabio Carvalho has seen very little Liverpool first team action since the World Cup break

‘He played well for us in a couple of games. Now it’s the situation where we have to make the squad and he couldn’t make it for the last one. That’s how it is, that’s the truth.

‘He didn’t play too often because, from my point of view, we needed different skills when we started or when we changed during the games.

‘That’s pretty much all, he did nothing wrong. He improved a lot, he developed a lot, he’s a good kid in the middle of the group, in the middle of the squad.’

Klopp’s side are trying to claw their way back up the table after what has been an extremely poor season so far.

They travel to face Newcastle on Saturday evening in what will no doubt be a serious test.
