Jose Mourinho’s first words as Roma boss after surprise appointment

Jose Mourinho has declared his desire to "build a winning project" after being appointed as the next Roma manager.

The Special One has not long been out of work having left Tottenham just over a fortnight ago.

But the Italian club have now announced that Mourinho will take charge at the Stadio Olympico from the start of next season.

Roma are without a Serie A title since 2001 and have sought out the Portuguese boss to end their drought.

Mourinho has previously won the title in Italy following his hugely successful spell at Inter Milan, whom he also led to the treble.

The 58-year-old believes he and Roma share the same ambitions and he declared his intentions for the club.

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” Mourinho told the club's website.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.

“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”

Club president Dan Friedkin and vice-president Ryan Friedkin both declared their joy at appointing Mourinho as they target success in the Italian capital.

They said: “We are thrilled and delighted to welcome José Mourinho into the AS Roma family.

“A great champion who has won trophies at every level, José will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.

“The appointment of José is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”
