Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba has run through the emotions from the day he denied Liverpool the Premier League title in 2014. Ba has explained what Jose Mourinho told his players ahead of their inspired 2-0 win at Anfield on a decisive day in the 2013/14 title race.

Liverpool had the chance to close in on their first Premier League success with a victory over Chelsea on home turf.

But Ba capitalised on Steven Gerrard’s now-iconic slip before Willian added a second in stoppage time.

It ended Liverpool’s 16-game unbeaten run and took the title out of Brendan Rodgers’ side’s hands.

Manchester City eventually pipped the Reds to the title by just two points, finishing on 86 compared to their primary challengers’ tally of 84.

Mourinho was over-elated after full-time as he passionately celebrated in front of the away end, knowing his side had blown the title race wide open.

In a recent interview, Ba revealed Mourinho fired up his Chelsea players by suggesting Liverpool would be disrespecting them ahead of kick-off.

He told The Athletic: “I remember Jose saying: ‘They think we’re a Mickey Mouse team! But we will show them!’ And we went out fighting.

“I was up against Martin Skrtel and Mama [Mamadou Sakho], and I played an unbelievable game. I felt like I did at Newcastle.

“This was the game that changed Jose’s view of me, I think.”

Ba’s goal that day turned out to be one of the most significant ever in a Premier League title race.

But the Senegalese star admitted he didn’t know how big his goal was until further down the line, as people still talk about it today.

“I only realised how big a deal that was a couple of years later, when people still talked about it,” Ba explained.

“They still talk about it! It was traumatic for them. But we didn’t enjoy the fact that we killed their dream, we simply enjoyed winning.”

The ex-Newcastle United star also stressed he didn’t take pleasure in capitalising on Gerrard’s error at Anfield.

He praised the Liverpool legend’s contributions to football but believes destroying his ‘fairytale’ story was just part of the sport.

Ba added: “No, not really. Because that’s the game. You make errors, and others take advantage.

“What Steven Gerrard has done for the world of football is tremendous. But this is life, unfortunately. Not all stories can end in fairytales.”
