Jose Mourinho quits role on UEFA board after lengthy ban for Anthony Taylor rant

Roma boss Jose Mourinho has quit his role on the UEFA football board following his four-match European ban.

Mourinho sent a letter to UEFA chief of football Zvonimir Boban, who chairs the board, informing the governing body of his decision after they punished him for the "abusive language" he directed towards Anthony Taylor during the Europa League final.

The Special One repeatedly directed his frustration towards Premier League referee Taylor throughout the match before waiting in the car park and confronting him in an expletive-laden rant.

His letter read: “In thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the UEFA football board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing my participation in this group.

“The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision. I kindly ask that you also communicate my decision to the President Mr. Aleksander Ceferin.”

Mourinho only joined the board back in April when it was founded by Boban and former official Roberto Rosetti. It is formed of coaches and players past and present and aims to tackle the major issues in European football.

Amongst its other members are England boss Gareth Southgate, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, and the recently retired Gareth Bale.

Mourinho will now not be joining them for the second annual meeting at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland next year. Roma are expected to appeal his ban but are waiting to receive the written reasons before doing so.

Mourinho was widely criticised for his post-match actions, which many felt incited the subsequent ugly scenes at Budapest airport where Taylor was confronted and attacked by angry supporters while heading home with his family in tow.
