Roma boss Jose Mourinho was held back by a member of his coaching staff after being shown a red card by referee Luca Pairetto on Saturday. As the Giallorossi stumbled towards a disappointing draw with Hellas Verona, the fiery Portuguese manager seemingly pushed the referee too far and will now serve a touchline suspension.

The pressure dial was creeping up on Mourinho heading into the tie, having overseen a troubling period of four consecutive winless games.

Indeed, Roma have not tasted victory in almost a month, and fans will have expected more out of a meeting with mid-table Verona.

There was a feeling of disbelief when the visitors raced into a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes, with goals from Antonin Barak and Adrien Tameze.

But substitute duo Cristian Volpato and Edoardo Bove saved the day for Mourinho’s men, with the former’s equaliser coming in the 84th minute.

That proved insufficient to satisfy Mourinho though, who took a swipe at the referee by pointing to his head, implying that he had made some questionable calls.

The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Real Madrid boss then booted a ball in the air, and Pairetto responded by sending him off.

Mourinho immediately stormed towards the referee while bellowing across the pitch, having to be held back by one of his coaching staff.

He then shook the hand of Verona manager Igor Tudor before taking his leave.

Including a pre-season tie with Real Betis, it was Mourinho’s third red card since taking over as Roma boss less than a year ago.

He has not had a harmonious relationship with referees since heading to Italy, receiving another red against Napoli in October for similar reasons, and being slapped with a fine one week later for his conduct towards a different match official.

The result leaves Roma one point from Serie A’s European spots with just 12 games left of their league season.

Bitter rivals Lazio sit above them, despite having played on game less, heaping pressure on Mourinho to close the gap before the end of the campaign.

Once the dust had settled on Roma’s draw with Verona, the manager took to Instagram to address the Giallorossi fans.

“I love these people and for them I fight,” he said.

“I don’t talk, [it] is better to go home and have a nice dinner. Have a good Sunday.”
