Joao Felix has emerged as a January transfer target for Arsenal following the injury suffered by Gabriel Jesus. And there are a few reasons why the Gunners would be the right move for the Portugal star.

Arsenal are set to be without Jesus for around three months after he successfully underwent surgery earlier this month. His absence will be felt, despite not scoring as many goals as he would have wanted since his arrival from Manchester City in the summer.

Felix is widely reported to want to leave Atletico Madrid in January. He has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone, having started just five La Liga matches this season.

Marca claims Arsenal are leading the race for his signature, ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea. Express Sport looks at three reasons why the Gunners would be a perfect destination for him.

Immediate starting spot

Felix would likely come straight into the Arsenal starting XI if he were to join. That may annoy Eddie Nketiah but Mikel Arteta cannot afford for results to drop off, with Manchester City close on their tails.

Felix is not an out-and-out striker but perhaps neither is Jesus, so that style of forward could suit the Gunners. In Jesus’ absence, Felix would be an ideal player to step in.

His versatility also means he can play in a variety of positions both across the frontline and in attacking midfield. Both Jesus and Felix could feature in the same starting XI, something that perhaps could not be levelled at Jesus and Nketiah.

Reignite career

Felix joined Atletico for an initial fee of around £113million in 2019. He remains one of the world’s most-expensive players of all time.

But there is a sense that his career is yet to take off in the way many expected. In 129 appearances for Atletico, he has 33 goals and 18 assists.

There are signs he could become more prolific in both categories. Arsenal could hand Felix the platform to fulfil his undoubted potential.

Arsenal going places

Arsenal are a young team who are on the up. Arteta has fielded 14 of the 24 youngest starting XIs in the Premier League this season.

That stat makes it even more remarkable that they are five points clear of serial champions City. Having only turned 23 last month, Felix fits perfectly into the squad profile at the Emirates.

If Arteta can keep his core group of players together, Arsenal are only heading in one direction. Adding stardust such as Felix to the mix could make that rise even faster.
