Jermain Defoe is close to completing an emotional return to Sunderland at the age of 39 after the ex-England striker terminated his contract with Scottish champions Rangers

Sunderland are close to agreement with free agent Jermain Defoe. The 39-year-old is agreeing a contract until the end of the season.
Defoe became a free agent following the mutual termination of his Rangers contract at the start of January and had been linked with a move to either Oxford United and Charlton Athletic.
However, Sunderland are said to be in pole position land the forward – who spent three seasons on Wearside between 2015-2017.

During his time at the club, Defoe scored a total of 37 goals in 93 games in all competitions for Sunderland.
Following that he went on to represent AFC Bournemouth before, most recently, playing for Scottish champions Rangers.
However, he mutually agreed to terminate his contract in Scotland after making just two top-flight appearances this term.

Despite being in pole position to land Defoe, Sunderland are focused on hiring a new manager after sacking Lee Johnson (above) on Sunday night
Should he return to the Stadium of Light, he will look to help 3rd place Sunderland push for promotion.
The 39-year-old’s arrival will also provide competition for League One’s top scorer Ross Stewart.
However, despite being in pole position to land Defoe, Sunderland are focused on hiring a new manager after sacking Lee Johnson on Sunday night.
Neil Lennon and Wigan’s Leam Richardson are among those under consideration for the position.
