Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher has tipped Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice to battle for the England captaincy when Harry Kane gives up the armband. The Tottenham striker led his country at the World Cup on Monday when the Three Lions defeated Iran 6-2 in their opening game of the tournament, but there is plenty of leadership in the squad.

Rice is captain of West Ham and Bellingham has donned the armband for Borussia Dortmund on occasion, and the two impressed against Iran and are expected to remain in the starting lineup to face the United States on Friday. Carragher has been impressed with Bellingham and compared him to Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, while tipping the teenager and Rice to battle to be the next England captain.

“I think to be captain of a club the size of Borussia Dortmund at 19 years of age as a young foreign player in Germany shows you how they feel about him,” Carragher said regarding Bellingham to Sky Sports.

“We already know he is a special talent, we already feel like he is one of the main players in the England team. It’s only the real special players that do that, you think of Michael Owen as soon as he came on the scene you felt like he was one of England’s best players, the same with Wayne Rooney.

“It feels like now the same with Jude Bellingham, and I think him and Declan Rice are going to be the mainstay in central midfield for the next two or three tournaments, and the two of them will probably be vying with each other over the next couple of years to see who will be captain of England, because when Harry Kane eventually gives the armband up and is no longer involved in the England squad, I think it’s either Jude Bellingham or Declan Rice who will be captain.”

Gareth Southgate has previously talked up Rice as a potential captain during the Nations League campaign. “He is right amongst that [captaincy group] despite his age,” Southgate said in March.

“What I have seen this season is the confidence that he has gained from his experience last summer. I think he had a huge impact on the game when he came on [in the 2-1 win over Switzerland].

“A really mature performance, strong, breaks the game up so well, but now has more confidence to drive with the ball and bring it forward as well.

“Without a doubt he has all the attributes to be a captain. There will be others, but we are gaining the rewards of the opportunities we had to blood him so young.”
