Jamie Carragher targeted England staff member due to Man Utd ties

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Sevilla game

Former Manchester United masseur Rod Thornley has recalled how Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher targeted him when he was working for England. Thornley claims that Carragher once said he was ‘f***ing getting it’ before a squad go-karting session on international duty.

The 45-year-old’s ill feeling toward United is no secret after 737 appearances for Liverpool across a 17-year career.

And Thornley, who worked as a masseur for both the Red Devils and England, has revealed that Carragher stood for Liverpool and the fanbase’s beliefs more than Steven Gerrard did.

That led to him keeping Thornley between his crosshairs for banter on England duty, and one incident involved high tensions on the go-kart track.

He told the Under the Cosh podcast: “There was always a needle with Carragher because of the United and Liverpool thing.

“We were away with England, and there was a go-kart place on site. This one night, there were loads of lads there, Carragher’s turned around, pointed at me and said, ‘you’re f***ing getting it’.

“We’re going round the track, and he’s just going right across the grass verges just to plough into me. I’m going round the corner, and he’s coming the other way.

“He just wanted to f***ing muller me because I was a Manc and he was a Scouser. We always got on, but he just wanted to muller me off the track.

“I could never envisage Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher as they are now because Neville epitomised Man United and what they loved and hated.”

But Thornley insisted it was all in jest and praised Carragher for his post-playing punditry work with Sky Sports and CBS Sports.

In particular, he hailed the Anfield great’s relationship with Gary Neville, as much as it comes as a surprise.

“Carragher was the same with Liverpool, more so than Gerrard did. They’re a class act, and they’re funny together,” Thornley continued.

Carragher earned 38 caps for England and featured in two World Cup tournaments – Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010.
