Jamie Carragher has revealed he exchanged messages with Harry Maguire to offer his support when the England defender was arrested in Greece last summer.

Maguire was given a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days after he was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult after arrest.

While his legal team appealed the verdict, a backlog in the country’s judicial system means a significant delay is expected.

The defender was withdrawn from England’s squad in the aftermath of the incident, and Carragher contacted Maguire to offer his support during a troubling time for the Manchester United man.

‘No matter how mentally strong you are, when you find yourself in a media storm – news reporters chasing a story in which you are at the centre – it is impossible to prepare for or know how to deal with that daily anxiety,’ Carragher wrote for the Telegraph.

‘It is not the impact on yourself that hurts most. You see the pain more in your family and friends. That’s what really gets to you.

‘Knowing how much support is around you is appreciated in such a situation, I contacted Maguire.

‘We exchanged a few messages in which I tried to offer reassurance from my own experience of being thrust into the limelight for the wrong reasons.

‘I told him to keep his head up and said that the current difficulties would pass.’

Carragher was better placed than most to help reassure Maguire, having gone through a media storm himself after he was filmed spitting at a man in another vehicle from his car as he was driving in 2018.

The pundit was suspended by Sky for the rest of the season, and appeared on Sky News to apologise and be interviewed, revealing the toll the incident had taken on his family.

‘It’s the only time I’ve reacted like that and it will be the only time I react like that,’ Carragher said at the time.

‘I have no excuse and it’s devastating for the family involved and also for my own family, but that’s down to my actions that’s brought that on.’
