Ilkay Gundogan’s double sandwiched a Bruno Fernandes penalty and helped Pep Guardiola’s relentless winning machine complete the second leg of what might yet become an historic treble.

The German midfielder opened the scoring after just 13 seconds with a stupendous volley and was on target again with another strike from outside the box six minutes into the second half.

Although the defenders in front of him were culpable for allowing space to shoot, David de Gea will feel he should’ve have done more to repel Gundogan’s scuffed effort, especially considering he got a hand to the City skipper’s shot.

The long-serving Spaniard is on the verge of signing a new contract, but a string of recent errors has seen fans and pundits alike question the wisdom of prolonging his Old Trafford career.

‘David de Gea is a big problem for Man United!’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘Is fixing that position more important than them signing a striker?’

For matchwinner Gundogan, meanwhile, his season goes from strength to strength having played such a key role during the Premier League run-in.

‘To win a final is always special,’ he said. ‘Every trophy is special. This group deserves it. We played really well, second half was amazing and we deserved to lift another trophy.

‘Obviously we know how we want to play the kick off and we aim to do that, to go long for Erling and try to get a second ball. It just placed amazingly for me and I just had to hit it. Obviously it was a quite good strike.’

On his own future, amid reports he is close to joining Barcelona, he added: ‘I don’t need these kind of days to feel appreciated and feel special in this club. I know that and that is why I have been here seven years. Nothing is decided yet, we will see what will happen.’
