Hannah Waddingham makes controversial Lewis Hamilton comment at British GP

F1: A lap of the British Grand Prix

Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham made a controversial Lewis Hamilton comment at the British Grand Prix which is sure to annoy Max Verstappen fans. The 48-year-old British actress said she was looking forward to seeing “eight-time” champion Hamilton on the grid.

The Mercedes driver looked set to win a record-breaking eighth championship before being denied by Verstappen in a dramatic finale to the 2021 championship. She told Channel 4: “I’ve waited a long time to be here and am I allowed to say I’m very much looking forward to seeing Lewis Hamilton eight-time champion.”

David Coulthard replied: “You can say whatever you want, I don’t think many people would disagree with that. He’s already a legend of the sport.” Waddingham added: “Oh my God is he ever? He’s just phenomenal and I hope I get to meet him and give him a little curtsy”

Hamilton fans took to social media to praise the Mercedes driver for the remark and for her support of the 38-year-old Briton.

@aeriastrofc posted: “Whatever Hannah Waddingham says is the law.” @jonwillchambers added: “We already knew she was golden but saying 8 time world champion Lewis Hamilton puts Hannah Waddingham in a new league. Hero.”

The race was Hamilton’s last title push with Mercedes struggling for pace since the start of the new 2022 regulations.

Hamilton was leading the majority of the 2021 Abu Dhabi finale before a controversial safety car call by race director Michael Masi allowed Verstappen to close up on fresh rubber. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff tried to sway Masi to end the race behind the safety car but the Australian decided to continue the race.

The Red Bull driver took just a handful of corners to pass his title rival and secure his maiden championship. Moments after the race, Hamilton suggested the race had been “manipulated” over team radio.

The FIA have since confirmed “human error” was to blame with Masi axed from his role for the 2022 campaign. In the aftermath of the season finale, several motorsport stars came to Hamilton’s defence.

Rally icon Sebastian Ogier claimed Hamilton was “robbed” of a title while McLaren’s Lando Norris suggested it was bordering on “unfair’. Former Sky Sports F1 commentator Johnny Herbert has also suggested the FIA got it wrong as Hamilton was denied the crown.
