Jadon Sancho was again an unused sub in England’s Euro 2020 triumph over Germany as Gareth Southgate’s side set up a quarter-final clash against Ukraine. But as Manchester United close in on signing the Borussia Dortmund winger, his lack of involvement could provide Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a triple boost ahead of a Premier League title challenge next term.

Sancho was expected to challenge the likes of Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish for a place in England’s attack at the European Championship finals after another excellent season for Dortmund.

But so far, the 21-year-old has made just one appearance from the bench – coming on with six minutes remaining of the group-stage win over the Czech Republic.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka was preferred for that game and turned in a man-of-the-match display, keeping his place for Tuesday’s Wembley showdown against Die Mannschaft.

At one stage during the clash with Joachim Low’s side, Erling Haaland joined the clamour for his club-mate to get more game time, with the Dortmund striker tweeting: “Time to bring on Sancho…”

As it turned out, England did fine without the winger, as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane fired the goals that secured England’s first knockout win over Germany since the 1966 World Cup final.

And with the likes of Sterling, Grealish and Saka in form, it is doubtful whether Sancho will get much time on the pitch against Ukraine on Saturday.

But United fans shouldn’t be worried about Sancho’s lack of action – for three reasons.

Players often experience a dip in energy levels after going deep into a tournament, which in the case of many England stars could cause a knock-on effect in the early weeks of the Premier League season.

But as things stand, Sancho won’t have that problem. While it is true that his season has been extended along with that of his Three Lions team-mates, his shortage of minutes in the intense competitive environment of a knockout game means he should be fit, fresh and firing on all cylinders for the start of next season.

Secondly, if United do complete a deal to sign Sancho, he will return to England with a point to prove next term.

Regardless of how much he plays over the remainder of Euro 2020, the winger will want to nail down a place in Southgate’s team ahead of next year’s World Cup, amid tough competition from the likes of Saka and Foden.

And that can only be good news for Solskjaer as he looks to sharpen up his attack for next season.

And thirdly, although the world knows all about Sancho’s abilities, he could be something of a secret weapon when it comes to Premier League combat.

Most top-flight stars won’t have played against Sancho – with the exception of England players in training games – with the attacker also having missed both Dortmund’s Champions League games against Manchester City through injury.

And opposition coaches will have to work out how their defences can contain his threat during the early months of the campaign.

That’s an advantage Manchester City won’t have if they sign Jack Grealish, with the Aston Villa having starred in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons.

City boss Pep Guardiola will also face the concundrum of working out where to play Grealish amid competition for attacking places between the likes of Foden, Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne.

In contrast, at United, there’s a spot on the right wing just waiting to be nailed down – and it’s all making for an exciting season ahead.
