ITV commentator Lee Dixon baffles fans as he says ‘I’m not big on formations’

Lee Dixon had fans watching the Community Shield reaching for the mute button after declaring he wasn't "big on formations" on commentary.

Manchester City took on Arsenal in the traditional season curtain raiser at Wembley, with two of the finest tactical minds in Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta pitted against each other.

But viewers expecting a little insight into the human chess match were immediately dispirited after hearing that Dixon, who was on co-commentary for ITV next to Sam Matterface, wasn't interested in talking about the tactics apparently.

"Did Lee Dixon just say he wasn't big on formations? Then what are you doing on commentary lad? It's your job to be into them!" one supporter tweeted in response.

"What actually is the point of Lee Dixon. He’s like the bloke down the pub who is completely out of touch, hasn’t done any prep makes what he thinks are witty little remarks but just sound smug," another wrote.

"I know right – I mean when have FORMATIONS ever been important in football tactics. Jesus wept. I used to like his punditry, now its simply laughable," a third joked, while a fourth said: "It's no surprise when he played in one of the most rigid and boring Arsenal teams ever."

A fifth fumed: "Can’t think of many worse combinations on TV than Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon. Mute."

Dixon, who made over 600 appearances for Arsenal as a player, has been working for ITV since 2012, having previously worked for the BBC as a pundit on Match of the Day.
