Italian footballer aged 18 dies after falling off a moped in horror accident
Italian football is mourning the loss of young Livorno player Anwar Megbli after he passed away at the age of 18 following a road accident on Saturday. The budding footballer was airlifted to hospital after falling off a moped in a horrific incident at the weekend but tragically lost his life on Monday, with the Serie D among those to pay tribute to Megbli to honour his life after announcing his death.
Megbli, a striker for his club’s youth team, had been riding on the back of one of his friends’ moped when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and he was airlifted to hospital by helicopter, with Megbli taken to Pisa’s Cisanello hospital on Saturday. However, two days later, it was announced on Monday that medics were unable to save his life and he was pronounced dead.
His friend remains in hospital and is recovering from the accident. Meanwhile, prosecutors in the region have begun their enquiries into establishing the events that led to the incident, with the driver of the car only identified as a 30-year-old man.
