‘Incredible’: Footballer recreates viral YouTube clip

This bloke will surely go down as one of the Bundesliga’s unluckiest footballers.

Werder Bremen defender Marco Friedl recreated one of YouTube’s most famous football videos, channelling the legendary Scott Sterling during Saturday’s loss to Union Berlin at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

With scores locked at 0-0 in the first half, Germany’s Robert Andrich attempted a shot on goal with a powerful strike from inside the box.

The shot was expertly blocked by the 23-year-old Friedl, who copped an unfortunate blow to the stomach and immediately hit the deck.

Andrich scampered after the ball and promptly fired in another shot, which inadvertently struck once again Friedl in the lower abdomen.

The referees blew the whistle to halt play, and Andrich nonchalantly booted the football towards his teammates for a cross — inevitably, it made contact with the bruised and battered Austrian.

That's got to hurt! ?⚽

The moment was oddly reminiscent of Studio C’s viral video Top Soccer Shootout Ever With Scott Sterling, which has registered over 81 million views since 2014.

Friedl bravely soldiered on, playing until he was subbed out of the contest in the 64th minute.

Werder Bremen ultimately lost the match 3-1, with Union Berlin’s Joel Pohjanpalo scoring a hat-trick for the home side.

Werder is 14th on the Bundesliga table following Saturday’s loss, just one point above the relegation zone.
