A group of "illiterate" Manchester United fans have been mocked for their botched anti-Liverpool "on the dole" banner.

United take on Spanish side Real Sociedad in their final Europa League group stage match on Thursday evening, with the club's supporters travelling in good numbers to watch their side in action. However, one set of fans have been ridiculed on social media after sharing an image of the banner they will be displaying at the Estadio Anoeta.

An image of four fans holding up the banner has been posted to Twitter, with the red, white and black flag featuring the "MUFC" initials and a red devil in the centre.

Either side of that, though, reads: "Oh it's Andy Cole. All the Scouser's on the dole." Rival fans have since been quick to pick up on the incorrect inclusion of an apostrophe in "Scousers".

“All that effort just to show that you're illiterate," commented one fan. Another added: “Need a sub-editor, mate? I’m available at a reasonable price.”

A third supporter also wrote: “So proud of a banner displaying such a poor command of English! Dear oh dear.” Meanwhile, another joked: “Good apostrophe mate.”

Others picked up on the fans' choice of footwear, with one of them wearing a pair of black and yellow trainers that proved amusing to rival supporters.

“Hahahahahahaha jokes on you fella WTF are those!” joked one fan. A second added: “Can’t be bouncing around in them carrying flags like that.” One more rival supporter also commented: “Look like something a clown would wear.”

Using an unnecessary apostrophe to form the plural of a noun is a common mistake. Sometimes, it’s called the grocer’s apostrophe because of how frequently it is spotted in grocery store advertisements.

The Red Devils face Sociedad in San Sebastian on Thursday evening in what is their final Europa League group stage match, with both sides already through to the knockout stages.

All that is left to decide is who will finish top of the group and advance directly through to the round of 16. The side which finishes second will face a two-legged tie with a third place team from the Champions League in February.

United, who lost the reverse fixture at Old Trafford 1-0 back in September, will leapfrog their opponents into first place if they win by two or more goals. Any other result will see Sociedad top the group instead.
