Ian Wright SLAMS Man United for their treatment of Jesse Lingard

‘Where is the duty of care?’: Ian Wright SLAMS Manchester United for their treatment of Jesse Lingard and says he ‘can’t understand’ Ralf Rangnick’s comments… as Roy Keane insists England midfielder should have quit the club after his West Ham loan

  • Ian Wright has blasted Manchester United for their treatment of Jesse Lingard
  • Lingard, 29, was denied a deadline day loan move to Newcastle by the club
  • Ralf Rangnick suggested that Lingard asked for time off after deadline day
  • That resulted in a ‘pile-on’ and Wright says the club lacked a ‘duty of care’

Ian Wright has blasted Manchester United amid Jesse Lingard’s stand-off with the club, hitting out at the Red Devils for failing in their ‘duty of care’ to protect the player.

Lingard took to Twitter to deny Rangnick’s suggestion that the Englishman had asked for time off after his loan move to Newcastle United failed on transfer deadline day.

After a sensational temporary spell at West Ham last term, Lingard has endured a frustrating season at Old Trafford and has been afforded little game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick.

And Arsenal legend Wright admitted that he has found the stand-off baffling, hitting out at the club for failing in their ‘duty of care’ to protect the player.

Reflecting on the saga, Wright said on ITV: ‘Communication breakdown. You have got a player that says he wants to play, then you’ve got the manager who comes out and says he said he wants a break.

‘Now, for me, it just seems really strange for Jesse. [He is] somebody that couldn’t hardly make the team here but we saw how hard he worked, went to West Ham and do very well.

‘[He is] somebody who has done well for Man United. The four finals they’ve been in since Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t been about, He’s played in four and scored in three, everything about him he wants to do well for the club.

Lingard denied claims by Ralf Rangnick that he asked for an extended break after deadline day

‘So I can’t understand why they’ve come out and said it. He’s had a pile on from people saying he doesn’t want to play for the club. Where is the [duty of care] in that?

‘I think it has been very unfair in respects of what he wants to do, what he is trying to do in respect of maybe he wants to leave the club, he wanted to get a loan move, whatever it is, they denied him the loan move and in a World Cup year, somebody who if he does well might get himself back in the World Cup.

‘There’s a lot of things that really have kind of gone wrong from both sides if you look at things, because he needs to play. Obviously he needs to play and I think he thought he was going to get to go on loan.’

Meanwhile United legend Roy Keane believes that Lingard should have quit United after his successful spell at West Ham. The Englishman stayed on at the club after being promised more game time by Solskjaer, only to fall down the pecking order.

Wright claimed that United have failed in their ‘duty of care’ to protect the English midfielder

‘He should have gone last summer,’ Keane said. ‘End of story. He had his chance. He played some games, proved what he is about, went to West Ham and got a run, having not played much football. People get bogged down by contract talk.

‘He wants to leave, he wants to leave on a free’ but you have to play the games. He can complain all he wants, it is not ideal between Jesse and the club at the moment. Last summer was his opportunity, he should have taken it.

‘If he had the chances, he might say “well the club, there wasn’t any proper deals on the table” last summer was his chance. At the moment he is just writing his season off and you cant afford to do that if he has big plans of getting back in the England set up.

‘Having said that, it is an important few months coming up for United, stranger things have happened. If he can come back in, he’s shown before that he has got quality.’
