Arsenal icon Ian Wright has named five players who will be upset to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad. Southgate has named a 25-man group for this month’s World Cup qualifiers, with Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho significant omissions.
England conclude their qualifying campaign against Albania and San Marino, looking to secure top spot in Group I.
If Poland beat Andorra and Hungary, the Three Lions need four points out of six to confirm their place in next year’s Qatar World Cup.
That presents a tricky feat before you remember one of the fixtures is against the world’s lowest-ranked nation.
The level of the opposition led to hope that Southgate would give current in-form stars the chance to impress, but he has played it safe with his selection.

And after the announcement, a frustrated Wright took to Twitter and named five players who will likely be disappointed to miss out.
He wrote: “I’ve been there where form is ignored and certain players are guaranteed spots!
“It’s hard to take because there is nothing else you can do. I don’t know what [Fikayo] Tomori needs to do to get in and get a chance.
“[Aaron] Cresswell, [Jarrod] Bowen, [Ben] White and [Conor] Gallagher will all be gutted.”

Wright interestingly excluded a notable name widely expected to make the cut – Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe.
The 21-year-old has been a central figure in Wright’s former club’s uprise in form, and many thought he would take Sancho or Lingard’s place.
But he will join the group listed above’s disappointment at missing out, especially considering the level of opposition England will face this month.
If Smith Rowe continues his electric run of form, though, he will leave Southgate with no choice but to include him in his 2022 World Cup squad.
