Aston Villa have been in impressive form since Steven Gerrard took over as boss in November. The former Liverpool midfielder took the helm at Villa Park after Dean Smith was given his marching orders following a run of five consecutive Premier League losses, and is now drawing up plans for the upcoming January transfer window.

Gerrard has led his side to four victories in his six games in charge, with the mood at the west Midlands club appearing to change overnight.

And in the two games Villa have lost, they were beaten by a single goal against Premier League title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool.

The future looks bright at Villa and Gerrard will now turn his attentions to bolstering his squad during the January transfer window.

And according to Calciomercato, Villa have already submitted a proposal to Liverpool to sign centre-back Joe Gomez.

The England international cemented his place as Virgil van Dijk’s preferred partner during the Reds’ title-winning 2019/20 campaign.

Gomez forced his way into the side midway through the season and missed just one match between the start of December and the end of the season.

He began the last campaign at the heart of the Liverpool defence but saw his season come to a premature end in November after he sustained a serious knee injury during an England training session.

Gomez returned to full fitness at the start of this season but has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield.

He now finds himself behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate and his future at the club has been cast into doubt.

Gomez was enjoying regular game time for England before his injury but hasn’t appeared for his country since returning to action.

And he may be left with no choice but to depart the north west to get his career back on track, though Calciomercato say Liverpool will not let Gomez leave.

Earlier this week, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp addressed the defender’s situation at Anfield.

“It was obviously not the best year for Joe, with the injury then coming back and having another injury, because that’s how it can go,” the German told reporters.

“We didn’t rush his recovery or rehab from the tendon injury, but there’s a moment when you start playing again, training again.

“Then we had three 100 per cent fit centre-halves, four 100 per cent fit centre-halves – that’s why it’s not so easy to get game time immediately.

“Then you have gametime, then you play and your body is not ready for it. That’s it.

“We are patient, and I think Joe is patient now as well. That’s the situation.

“I have no plans to give anybody on loan in the winter. I am not the driving force, let me say it like this.”
