‘I was attracting attention from women at Man Utd – so Sir Alex rang my mum’

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson once rang his mother to tell her about his womanising ways.

During his time at Old Trafford, the former England winger made over 200 appearances between 1988 and 1996, a spell in which he helped Man United win three Premier League titles.

Alongside the likes of Gary Pallister and Roy Keane, Sharpe and the rest of the Man United squad liked to enjoy themselves off the field. There were plenty of drinking sessions going on amongst the squad, which sometimes left Ferguson frustrated with his squad.

And so frustrated did he get with Sharpe and his antics with the female population of Manchester, the legendary manager even once phoned the winger's mum to ask her to have a word with her son.

Speaking to the 'Undr The Cosh' podcast, Sharpe said: "He [Ferguson] knew that team spirit and team bonding through a drink helped the team more than it hindered.

"I went to Leeds after and I spoke to a couple of lads when we went away with England and they were up to ten times worse than what we were getting up to.

"But because we under such a spotlight and the club was so big and Fergie was so strict, our team was reasonable well behaved."

He added: "He rang my mum. He said 'Mrs Sharpe, I'm just wondering if you could have a word with Lee'. 'Have a word with Lee, he's not lived with us for five years' she said. 'You're his manager, why don't you have a word with him, what's the problem?'

"He said 'he seemed to be getting a lot of attention from the female population of Manchester, and the problem is he's taking most of them up on their offer.'

"Nobody ever pulled me about anything in the end, I just carried on my merry way!"
