Harvey Elliott blasts appeal rejection as “wrong” in classy Pascal Struijk post

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has taken to Instagram to defend Pascal Struijk after Leeds United’s red card appeal was rejected.

Struijk, 22, made a recovery tackle on Elliott in Sunday’s fixture as his side trailed by two goals, but the impact of the challenge resulted in the 18-year-old suffering a dislocated ankle.

The defender’s tackle was a genuine attempt at winning the ball but he was given a straight red by referee Craig Pawson due to the dangerous nature of the slide.

Leeds attempted to have Struijk’s three-match ban rescinded but the appeal was rejected on Wednesday by the Premier League.

Yet, even despite facing a long spell on the sidelines due to the challenge and having his exciting spell in the first-team come to a premature halt, Elliott delivered a classy message to Struijk on social media after his appeal was denied.

Elliott wrote on Instagram: “Sorry about this Pascal. I think it’s wrong! But it’ll soon blow over brother and you’ll be back in no time smashing it again. Keep positive.”

The Leeds player will now miss the next three matches against Newcastle, Fulham (Carabao Cup) and West Ham.

Another added: “I was impressed by the amount of respect players were showing each other in light of that incident. It was unfortunate.”

Liverpool next face AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday evening and will have to adjust without the talented youngster, who had featured in all four of their games this season.
