Harry Redknapp told wife ‘it’s a misunderstanding’ when police kept him in cell

Harry Redknapp told his beloved wife Sandra that it was just a 'misunderstanding' when he spent a night in a police cell over alleged corruption before his 2012 trial.

In their new book, When Harry Met Sandra, Sandra opens up about the events that preceded Harry's 2012 trial for alleged tax evasion and calls it the 'biggest test' of their extended marriage with it handing them a fight-year nightmare in total.

Although the trial only lasted two weeks before Harry was cleared of all charges, their concerns began back in November of 2007 when a home-alone Sandra received a knock from the police at their residence in Bournemouth.

Having been initially terrified due to a recent break-in in which a neighbour was held at gunpoint, Sandra expected the worse and even feared that Harry had been killed in a plane crash having been in Germany at the time.

When told that the house needed to be searched, Sandra initially refused to open the gate before being informed that there was a warrant for a house search over alleged corruption.

Having opened the gate, the police thoroughly searched the premises and left the house a total mess, with Sandra admitting that after the terror and fear had passed – she was left totally furious.

On Harry's arrival back in the UK a few hours later, he called from a police station to tell his wife that he was being kept in – with officers looking at a £100,000 payment made to Portsmouth player Amdy Faye by his football agent Willie McKay back in 2003.

Sandra says: "The police believed the money had been paid to avoid tax and wanted to know who gave the payment the green light – Harry being one of the suspected."

She says that Harry said at the time: "I don't deal with the money side of things, Sarn. It is just a misunderstanding, it will all be sorted out soon."

Having been left angry and embarrassed with the road shown on breakfast television, Sandra says that she knew to trust Harry and was sure he wouldn't have had any involvement.

Having spent a night in the cells, Harry returned to the family home, with Sandra saying that she hugged him tightly as he entered the front door.

Having been open about his finances to the police, which included an account in Monaco, a new tax investigation started which resulted in the 2012 trial.

With Harry found innocent of two counts of cheating the public revenue by the jury, he said he finally had his life back.

When Harry Met Sandra is out on Thursday (September 29), £20, published by Mirror Books
