Harry Kane wants to write Hollywood story with England and Bayern Munich

Gareth Southgate previews England’s clash with Ukraine

Harry Kane has already been told the script is being written and his job is simply to supply the Hollywood ending. The producers could even ask Joseph Fiennes to reprise his Gareth Southgate role after recent theatrical success, but Kane knows he is the one who needs to take the lead for England and Bayern Munich.

Because to turn this into a blockbuster would need a genuine A-lister to carry the project right to that final reel. “I have been told about the Champions League final in Wembley, for sure,” Kane said. “I know the Euros are in Germany next summer so if there’s someone out there writing a movie, I will try and do my best to make it happen!”

“It’s hard. There’s so much time to go I don’t want to think about it too much, but if it did happen it would be incredible.” These days not even a best-actor Oscar would appease him – Kane no longer has any truck with individual honours.

Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record was never close to making him think twice about heading to Bayern Munich to chase instead the team medals so many of the rest of his England team-mates seem to have. “There was a lot of talk about it and the fact I was getting closer to it but I have never been anybody who has chased individual honours ahead of team awards,” Kane said.

“The record of course would be amazing and it might be amazing if one day I do end up breaking it. But it is not why I play football and my move shows that. Ultimately it comes down to me to see how good I can be and I felt like I had to be playing Champions League football and competing for titles each year.

“Bayern Munich definitely gives me that. As a competitor, when the boys are playing the Champions League and I am just sitting at home watching it, I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that hurt.

“Of course, I want them to do well – Kyle [Walker] and all those guys to win when they are in competitions I am not in – but a part of me wants to have those experiences. With the other players in the team having done that, I am not sure jealous is the right word, but it does motivate me to go on and try to push myself towards some of those trophies the guys have got.

“Just the experiences of having title runs and cup runs and hopefully a Champions League run will only add, hopefully, to handling pressure in certain situations. If we are going to win anything with England we are going to have to deal with that.

“Me, being captain, I want to put myself in that position as much as possible.” Certainly he cannot wait for his Champions League return – when Manchester United of all teams are the visitors to the Allianz Arena. “It will be a tough one but I’m looking forward to it,” Kane said.

In the meantime, he is focusing on adding to his tally of three Bundesliga goals as he helps Munich roll out the solid stream of victories that is expected of them. Although he has not quite taken his eye off those individual awards completely at a time when Jude Bellingham had rattled in five goals in his first four games for Real Madrid before meeting up with England for today’s game against Ukraine.

“I haven’t mentioned the European Golden Boot to him this week, it is too early,” Kane added. “If we get to March and he is still up there with me, I might have a few words!”
