England star Harry Kane’s brace keeps him in the chase for the Euro 2020 Golden Boot – and is proving Paul Merson right.

The Three Lions captain scored either side of half time to reach the semi-finals with a 4-0 win against Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome.

It means he is on three for the tournament, having scored the second against Germany at Wembley in the 2-0 round-of-16 victory – his first strike for his country since the end of March.

Kane is now just two away from the leading scorers in the tournament, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick.

With both now out of Euro 2020, it opens up an opportunity for the Tottenham forward to continue pushing for a Golden Boot in consecutive tournaments, having scored six at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

And it would see Merson, who won two First Division titles at the front of rivals Arsenal’s attacking line, get proved right in his prediction for the 27-year-old’s output for the Ukraine win.

Writing in his Daily Star Sport column on Friday, the former Gunners forward said: “Harry Kane is up and running and it wouldn’t surprise me if he wins the Golden Boot at the Euros now.

“I’ve never seen a player before who can be so poor on a Saturday and then walk off with the match ball on a Tuesday.

“But that’s what Kane is like. There’s an art to that. He has that confidence about him.

“Now he’s got his goal I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets two or three against Ukraine, and lets face it, he’s playing every minute of every game from now on.

“This isn’t the group stage any more where you can take him off. This is knockout football – and he’s our best penalty taker. He stays on the pitch.”

Kane is expected to be part of Gareth Southgate’s starting XI to take on Denmark in the semi-final at Wembley on July 7.
