Haaland sparks potential Mbappe rivalry with comments after Dortmund brace

Erling Haaland could spark a rivalry with Kylian Mbappe following comments he made on Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old put in a stellar display against Sevilla, scoring twice and grabbing an assist as Borussia Dortmund won 3-2 in Spain.

It takes his goalscoring record to a jaw-dropping 25 in 24 games – eight coming in five Champions League matches.

The Norwegian has been tipped as one of the best youngsters in the world – competing with Mbappe for the title.

And many believe that the pair will take over as the top two when Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi hang up their boots.

Haaland's comments following his brace also suggest that he is ready to rival the Paris Saint-Germain star.

“It was good to score goals, I love the Champions League,” the Norway striker said after the final whistle.

“And when I saw Mbappe scored a hat-trick yesterday, I got free motivation. So, thanks to him. It was a nice evening.”

And while he denied being in a “challenge” with Mbappe, he added: “He scored some nice goals and I got a free boost from him, so it was nice.”

Mbappe was in stellar form himself this week in the Champions League, scoring a hat-trick against Barcelona as PSG ran out 4-1 winners at the Nou Camp on Tuesday.

A late goal from Luuk de Jong made it 3-2 to the German side, who would have to lose by a margin of two goals in the second leg to be knocked out.

And though that is a tough ask for Sevilla, it is not impossible – though with Haaland in majestic form they might find they will need to score more than two.
