Gylfi Sigurdsson ‘set to earn £1.7m-a-year as he agrees move’ after Everton exit

Gylfi Sigurdsson is said to have agreed a lucrative move to Galatasaray after being released by Everton last month.

It is claimed the midfielder will earn £1.7million-a-season at the Turkish club, despite the fact he hasn't kicked a ball for over a year, according to AS Marca in Turkey.

He would join Adana Demirspor's Birkir Bjarnason as the second Icelandic player in the Turkish Super Lig, and the ninth in the division's history.

Sigurdsson was let go by the Toffees at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract, with his last appearance for the club coming in May 2021.

The 33-year-old spent five seasons at Goodison Park – having arrived for a club-record £40 million fee back in 2017 – racking up 156 appearances and scoring 31 goals. He was the club's top scorer in 2018/19 and regularly chipped in with goal contributions throughout his stint on Merseyside.

Having emerged from Reading's youth academy after being poached from Iceland as a teenager, Sigurdsson went on to make over 400 appearances in English football – with notable spells at Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur.

He's also been a central figure in the Iceland national team's rise to prominence over the past few years, playing a major part in getting the country to its first ever European Championships in 2016, and its first ever World Cup two years later.
