Pep Guardiola suggested that Manchester City will continue to monitor Phil Foden’s niggling injuries over the next month.

City are confident that they can select Foden, who will train later today, for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Wolves.

The 21-year-old came off at half-time of Tuesday’s Champions League defeat by RB Leipzig after feeling pain in his ankle.

Foden has been working his way back to fitness after suffering an ankle injury last month. Guardiola claimed the player has had no time to allow the issue to properly heal.

‘When you have an injury in the ankle, with a two-month holiday you can recover,’ Guardiola said. ‘But with games every three days always you have niggles.

‘All the time he has niggles – you have to live with that – but he is getting better.

‘He will dictate, says how he feels. Knowing Phil, he will want to be there, he will want to fight to be there. We will see how he feels game by game.’

City went top of the Premier League last weekend for the first time this season and face a stubborn Wolves at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Only the top three – City, Liverpool and Chelsea – have conceded fewer goals than Bruno Lage’s side so far this term.

Guardiola said the team are relishing the prospect of a hectic festive calendar as they aim to retain their lead.

‘The schedule is good, it’s historic,’ he added. ‘I like to play in the winter time – my words will not change anything. If you have just two days rest between games, no time to recover, every season nothing changes, but just adapt and pray for no injuries.

‘We go forwards, the players have ability to go to their limits as much as possible.

‘What is next for us is tomorrow at 12.30 and we don’t think about other things. The next one the most important.’
