  • The forward is set to leave Juventus with a move to the Etihad a possibility
  • But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted Manchester United could make a move
  • Guardiola admitted Ronaldo will decide which club he wants to join

Pep Guardiola cast doubt over Manchester City’s ability to land Cristiano Ronaldo before the transfer window closes.

The City boss claimed a move for Ronaldo is ‘far, far away’ just minutes after his Manchester United counterpart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, talked up their interest in the superstar.

City have been offered the 36-year-old, who has told Juventus his intention to leave, but do not want to pay a fee and would want to negotiate a reduction on a £500,000-a-week contract.

Pep Guardiola has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo will make the final decision on which club he joins this summer

The Juventus star is set to leave the club this summer and is closing in on a move to the Etihad

‘In my personal view, there are few players – Ronaldo included – that they are the ones who decide where they play,’ Guardiola said.

‘It’s [about] where there desire is to play. I’m more than delighted with the squad we have and my feeling is we stay the same. All I can say in the three of four days left, anything can happen.

‘Cristiano will decide where he wants to play. Not Man City, not myself. There are a few things that are far, far away.

City could find themselves in a battle with United to sign the 36-year-old before the deadline

‘These types of players decide. Messi decided himself where he wanted to play. They knock the door, they call. These re situations I cannot control.’

United famously swooped for Alexis Sanchez in January 2018 when City had made their intentions to land the Chilean clear. City backed away over the finances involved in that deal.

The Premier League champions could still end the summer without a replacement for Sergio Aguero after their pursuit of Harry Kane ended this week.

Guardiola added: ‘I’m incredibly happy with the squad. I’m focused on the players I have.

The club did absolutely everything. Tottenham didn’t want to negotiate. The big master of the negotiation, Mr Daniel Levy, knows everything. Maybe I would do the same if I had Harry Kane in my team. I wish him all the same for the rest of his career and doing well in London.’

The City boss also insisted the club did everything they could to sign Harry Kane from Spurs
