Graeme Souness heaps praise on 'world class' Harry Kane
‘This is the best I’ve seen him’: Graeme Souness heaps praise on ‘world class’ Harry Kane after inspiring Spurs to victory over Villa… while hat-trick hero Son Heung-min lauds Hugo Lloris’ first-half display, insisting he deserved Man of the Match
- Spurs win 4-0 away at Aston Villa to move into the driving seat for top four
- Son scores a hat-trick as he matches Eden Hazard’s Chelsea record
- Graeme Souness says that Harry Kane is in the form of his life under Conte
Graeme Souness has praised Tottenham striker Harry Kane after another virtuoso performance, saying that this is the ‘best’ version he has seen of the player.
Speaking after Spurs beat Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park to move firmly into the box seat for the top four, Souness said that Kane was becoming a player people pay just to watch.
Despite not scoring, Kane once again turned provider for Spurs laying on two of the four goals they scored.
Graeme Souness said that this was the best version of Harry Kane that he had seen
Speaking on Sky Sports after the win, Souness said: ‘I think Harry Kane since he’s come back, he had a disastrous start by his standards, is quickly becoming a player who you’d pay to watch just him play.’
The former Liverpool captain added: ‘I think his football at the moment is the best I’ve seen from him. Okay, he won’t be entirely happy because he’s not getting the goals. But his game is just superb.
‘He’s just an all-round super footballer at this time. He won’t be happy as I said, because he’s a striker and strikers are a strange animal.’
Darren Bent, on punditry duty with Souness, echoed his sentiments suggesting that Kane might not have had a ‘clear mind’ during the first part of the season when his performance levels were not as high.
‘It’s almost like he’s [Kane] playing with a clear mind now. We know at the start of the season what had gone on,’ he said.
‘Since Antonio Conte came in, it looks like he’s better than he was last season,’ he added.
Son’s hat-trick was instrumental in Spurs ensuring fourth spot in the league was ever closer
‘His numbers maybe suggest not, but his all round game at the minute. His link-up play, he’s a goal threat, his relationship with Son is just incredible. But it looks like, when Harry Kane gets an opportunity now, he doesn’t miss.’
Meanwhile, Son Heung-min, who netted a hat-trick, credited Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with bailing the team out on a number of occasions in the first half.
Spurs were uncharacteristically shaky at the back during the opening period and the scoreline perhaps flattered them.
Hugo Lloris had to perform heroics throughout the first half after Villa peppered his goal
Son said: ‘I think without Hugo we’d really struggle in the first-half, he saved us in the game today.
‘I think probably he is the winner today, and I’m really grateful to have this captain beside me.’
Lloris said that it was the time since Conte took over that Spurs had conceded so many opportunities in one game.
Son’s goals took him to 17 for the season, only three off Mo Salah in the golden boot charts
The Spurs captain said: ‘I think it was the first time since AC took over that we conceded so many chances. It was a tough battle as we expected. I think we started really well with the goal. Then they started to increase the intensity that we couldn’t match.’
He added: ‘We lost a lot of duels and conceded a lot of chances. After the storm, we took control in the second half and then with the quality we have in front, players like Kulu, Sonny and Harry, they can make the difference at any moment.’
The win for Spurs came after Manchester United and Arsenal had both lost earlier in the day ensuring Spurs held onto fourth for another week and inched closer to the Champions League.
Although Spurs have played one game more than Arsenal who are in fifth, their far superior goal difference in essence negates the Gunners’s game in hand.
