Tearful Gonzalo Higuain announces he will retire at the end of the Major League Soccer season with Inter Miami… after glittering career including goal-laden spells at Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus

Legendary striker Gonzalo Higuain has announced he will retire from football at the end of the Major League Soccer season.

The 34-year-old made the announcement at an Inter Miami press conference on Monday alongside coach Phil Neville.

He got tearful as he thanked his family, who were in attendance, while the Inter Miami team watched on.

‘The day has come to say goodbye to football,’ Higuain said, before underlining his desire to lead Miami into the MLS playoffs in his remaining games with the team.

‘All work has a reward, it’s my turn at the most important moment of the season, to be able to help the team and be one step away from being able to qualify for the playoffs.’

Higuain’s career saw him play for Europe’s elite sides such as Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan and Chelsea before heading to the United States in 2020.

He won 13 different trophies and while at Madrid, he won the Spanish league title three times and the Copa del Rey once.

With Madrid, Higuain made the most appearances he ever would for a club with 190. He also scored 107 goals for Los Blancos, the most of any one club in his career.

His exploits in Italy landed him three Coppa Italia titles. One of those came with Napoli in the 2013-14 season, with whom he played 104 games and scored 71 goals. Higuain moved to Juventus in the 2016 season, where he would make 105 appearances, scoring 48 goals, winning his other two Coppa Italia crowns as well as three Serie A titles.

While at Juventus, he was sent on loan to AC Milan and then Chelsea. With the Blues, he won his only European crown – capturing the 2018-19 edition of the UEFA Europa League.

He played 71 times for Argentina, scoring 31 goals and playing in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, which his country lost to Germany.

Inter Miami plays next on Wednesday, against Orlando City. The team has two games remaining this season to clinch a playoff place and potentially extend Higuain’s farewell.

At present, Miami is seventh in the Eastern Conference which is the final playoff spot but it is level on points with eighth-place Columbus, while Charlotte in ninth are only four points back with two games to go.

Higuain has scored 14 goals in 26 games for Miami so far in 2022, including six in his last six. His strike on Saturday gave Miami a narrow 1-0 win and a crucial three points in its playoff fight.
