The mayor of Gdansk has condemned violent attacks that Manchester United supporters suffered ahead of tonight's Europa League final.

Fans that have traveled to Poland for the European final were attacked last night in the Polish city, with three supporters hurt as a result.

The unprovoked attacks are believed to have been carried out Lechia Gdansk supporters, which involved bottles and chairs being thrown by a group of individuals wearing dark clothes.

Responding to this news, local mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz criticised the ugly events that unfolded.

She tweeted: "Yesterday there was a hooligan attack on the fans of the teams that came to the Europa League final. In Gdansk, an open and solidary city, there is no place for any kind of violence!

"Dear fans and guests, you are always welcome and we cordially welcome you to our city!"

One supporter in Gdansk shared his experience of the frightening encounter, telling Sky Sports: "One of them came up to me, pushed me to the ground and started stamping on me multiple times.

"Luckily my dad came and helped me out but yeah it wasn't very nice. A bit worrying."

United issued a club statement after discovering what had occurred to their supporters.

"Club staff were assisting a number of United fans in Gdansk last night and today after an incident where some of our supporters were attacked outside a bar in the city."

A total of 9,500 spectators will attend tonight's game, including 2,000 from each side.

The Red Devils are favourites to come out on top and claim a second Europa League title in the space of four years.

But United are expected to be without club captain Harry Maguire, who did not train with the team yesterday.
