Gary Neville’s combined Liverpool and Man Utd XI includes four Red Devils stars

Gary Neville has named his combined Liverpool and Manchester United XI ahead of their mouthwatering showdown at Anfield – but only four Red Devils stars make the cut.

United head to Anfield with a three-point lead over their bitter rivals at the top of the Premier League table, having claimed five wins in their last six games and avoided defeat since November 1.

Liverpool will be determined to pick up their first victory in four outings and climb back above Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men into top spot, with their four-year unbeaten home record also on the line.

And before the two sides go head-to-head on Merseyside, United legend Neville has taken to Twitter to name his combined XI.

Alisson gets the nod ahead of David de Gea in goal, which is hardly a surprise given the latter’s inconsistent form in recent seasons.

Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson take up three of his four defensive places.

Neville believes United captain Harry Maguire should slot in alongside Van Dijk at centre-back, controversially leaving out Reds defenders Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

However, his most opinion-dividing selection comes in the middle of the park.

Fabinho fully deserves his place in the XI and could have even been named as a defender given his solid performances as a makeshift centre-back for Liverpool this season.

And there’s no disputing Bruno Fernandes’ inclusion, as the £67million midfielder has transformed United’s fortunes since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January.

But Neville has sparked controversy by selecting Paul Pogba as his third midfielder ahead of Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara, as well as United’s Scott McTominay.
