Gary Neville has given his thoughts on the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer while alluding to Manchester United’s prospective pursuit of Erling Haaland. As well as the Red Devils, the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in the Borussia Dortmund hotshot.

Ronaldo has been signed as a stop-gap between now and a time United can sign Haaland, potentially next summer.

That is the latest from club legend Neville, who debated with Jamie Carragher on Sky Sport’s Monday Night Football last night.

The Red Devils were interested in Haaland prior to signing Ronaldo but may have to wait until next year when a release clause worth £68m comes into effect.

But they run the risk of losing out to another competitor for the Norweigan’s signature with local rivals City, Real Madrid and Barcelona all desperate to land the Leeds-born ace.

Regardless, United can rest easy knowing they have Ronaldo – one of the best finishers of all time – but Neville reckons his old club cannot rest on their laurels.

“Manchester United will probably lose Martial, Mata, Cavani – they’ll get another year out of him,” he told Sky Sports.

“So that’ll free some space up, if Haaland becomes available next season they’ll have to do a deal with his agent – which is a big thing for Haaland. United should go for him, I don’t think Cristiano coming prevents Haaland from coming.

“[If Haaland comes] he wouldn’t be on the bench, he’s played with Benzema, Bale, all these great Galacticos at Real Madrid.

“Why would you put him on the bench? You can fit two strikers in the team surely.”

Despite Ronaldo insisting he is here to take United back to the top, Neville reckons the 36-year-old’s return is a “cameo” to help bridge the gap in the short-term for the Red Devils.

He added: “Manchester United are going to get a cameo out of Cristiano Ronaldo for 12-18 months, they’re going to get an absolute cameo out of him, but in terms of, Kane would be there five or six years.

“Haaland, if you said to me Haaland, Kane or Ronaldo, I’d say Kane or Haaland because they’ll be there for six years.

“This is a cameo, I think United needed a right winger, they got Sancho, they needed a forward, they’ve got Ronaldo. I’m delighted in the short-term.”
