Gary Neville can't believe Chelsea's Joao Felix decision

‘The one player they should have an option on they haven’t got’: Gary Neville can’t believe Chelsea DON’T have a buy clause in Joao Felix’s loan as he mocks their transfer policy after Portuguese star’s brilliant consolation goal at Old Trafford

  • Felix is on-loan at Chelsea but the agreement doesn’t include an option to buy
  • The Portuguese talent will return to Atletico Madrid at the end of the season

Gary Neville baulked at Chelsea’s failure to include an option-to-buy in Joao Felix’s loan deal at the club following Manchester United’s 4-1 win over the Blues on Thursday.

United secured Champions League football for next season, while Chelsea slipped to 12th in the Premier League standings and face the reality of dropping further down the standings in their final match of the season.

Portuguese playmaker Felix scored a late consolation goal for the visitors at Old Trafford after coming off the bench for Frank Lampard’s side in the second-half.

The 23-year-old will return to LaLiga outfit Atletico Madrid at the end of the season once his short-term loan deal expires, and Neville was astonished that the London side failed to include any permanent in his deal, despite having splashed out over £600million on incomings in the space of a year.

Neville raved about Felix’s quality, explaining on Sky Sports: ‘He [Felix] is a proper player, just the way he moves with the ball it looks different.

‘He is so in control, class, real class, he has options in front of him but thinks no I am going to go on my own, really good finish.

‘They [Chelsea] have signed everybody but the one player they should have an option on they haven’t got,’ he added.

Felix is expected to be looking for a new permanent move in the upcoming transfer window after falling out of favour in the Spanish capital.

The creative talent recently admitted he has ‘loved’ his time at Chelsea but refused to confirm he would be returning to the club in the future.

Chelsea are unable to be able to offer Champions League football and Felix reportedly considers playing in Europe’s elite competition as a priority.

He has been linked with a host of top clubs, but, hit back at rumours linking him with a possible move to Newcastle United.

Thursday’s strike was his fourth goal of the season for Chelsea where he has been one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise awful campaign for the Blues.

Chelsea’s inability to strike a previous agreement with Atletico could force them into paying over the odds for Felix, with the Diego Simeone’s side looking to claw back the majority of the £113m they paid for him in 2019.
