Gary Neville certainly endured an action-packed evening as Manchester United overcame Burnley to move top of the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Paul Pogba's deflected second-half volley secured the Red Devils a hard-fought 1-0 win at Turf Moor, where Harry Maguire saw an opener controversially ruled out.

The result saw United go top at this stage of the season for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out as champion in 2012-13, giving them a three-point cushion over Liverpool ahead of Sunday's trip to Anfield.

But the game wasn't without its controversy – and former Red Devils hero Neville didn't hold back during his commentary duties with Sky Sports.

The video assistant referee provided the main talking point of a tense opening period, with last man Robbie Brady avoiding sanction for bringing down Edinson Cavani due to a Luke Shaw foul in the build-up.

On Shaw's challenge, Neville said: "I think it's a foul definitely by Luke Shaw because he misses the ball and then follows through.

"I think he could be in trouble Luke Shaw looking at it again, because he actually puts his left leg out towards, but we'll see."

The left-back, who was booked for his hefty challenge on Johann Berg Gudmundsson, soon swung in a cross that Harry Maguire headed home from an acute angle, only to be ruled out for an apparent foul on Erik Pieters.

The United skipper was furious that the decision was not reviewed and Neville said: "He gets up early Harry Maguire at the back post.

"Maybe it's just the left hand on [Pieters'] head. Maybe just that left elbow in the back, using it as you ordinarily would do to leverage."

United eventually gained the lead in the 71st minute, through a Pogba strike, but Burnley piled the pressure on in an attempt to grab a late equaliser.

Josh Brownhill struck wide and substitute Matej Vydra saw an effort deflected into the side netting by Eric Bailly as Burnley launched a late attack, with the VAR checking a handball against Maguire in the box.

Neville again expected the worst and before the Maguire handball was ruled out, he said: "He could be in trouble here."

Ultimately, though, United held on and the former England star apologised for his commentary after the game.

He wrote on Twitter: "Apologies for the commentary tonight!"

"Stockley Park all over the place, producer in my ear saying Salford have scored in the 92min and United gone top of the league! Delirious! I will be better Sunday."
