Gary Neville and Paul Scholes disagree about the state of Man Utd
Man Utd are still struggling despite Luton win | Football Digest
Manchester United heroes Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have disagreed about where the Red Devils will finish in the Premier League this season. Erik ten Hag’s team have underwhelmed on the pitch during the early stages of the campaign and have already lost five top-flight matches. Neville has previously said his former employers won’t secure a top-four finish, but Scholes thinks they still have a chance.
United endured a dismal start to the campaign as they lost three of their opening five Premier League matches as well as their first two Champions League encounters.
Ten Hag’s team have improved in recent weeks, however, and have climbed to sixth in the top-flight table off the back of four wins from their last five. But they are still five points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham, with a whole host of teams vying to secure a spot in European football’s top-tier club competition next season.
Last month Neville said on his podcast: “I don’t think Manchester United will finish in the top five this season. But they proved me wrong last season after having a very poor start.”

Scholes has now had his say on the race for the top four and told the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel: “We know there’s a big gap when it comes to the likes of [Manchester] City. Other teams, it is much of a muchness. Yeah Liverpool are decent, Arsenal are decent, but Man United should be in that fight for the top four. And I still think they will be come the end of the season.”
United are set to embark on a tough run of fixtures after the international break comes to an end. After travelling to Everton at the end of the month, the Red Devils will take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And following a home clash with Bournemouth, Ten Hag’s side will visit Liverpool and West Ham before Christmas.

Ten Hag guided his team to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Luton at Old Trafford last time out. And following that encounter, the Dutchman addressed United’s top four aspirations as he explained: “Even after all the setbacks we dealt with, we are still in a position near the top four. And when we start to play well and get a team that is set for weeks and months, [then maybe] other teams will get their setbacks and drop points.
“Now we have won four games out of five in the Premier League. We are in quite a good position if you see all the trouble we had. We are in a very good position. That is a reason to be optimistic.”
