Gary Lineker’s son misses out on huge acca after Man Utd draw with Southampton

During a weekend to forget for the Lineker family, Gary's eldest son George missed out on a huge accumulator bet thanks to Manchester United's stalemate.

With Gary in attendance at Leicester vs Chelsea another of his four sons, Angus, George was watching nine games of his 10-fold acca come in – before United took on Southampton.

With Casemiro seeing red to be handed a four-game ban and Marcus Rashford failing in his bid to win a penalty, Erik ten Hag's men drew 0-0 – to cost George £700.

George tweeted on Sunday: "Back to more important things, United have done me for £700 in my 10 game acca. Handy."

The 31-year-old was of course poking fun as his dad being forced to 'step away' from his BBC presenting duties, which led to an unrecognisable Match of the Day.

That decision came after he tweeted criticism of the government's controversial asylum policy, only for colleagues to walk out en masse in solidarity with the England icon.

In an update on Monday (March 13), Lineker was reinstated to his role before the FA Cup coverage of next weekend, with director general Tim Davie apologising.

Davie said: "Everyone recognises this has been a difficult period for staff, contributors, presenters and, most importantly, our audiences. I apologise for this.

"The potential confusion caused by the grey areas of the BBC’s social media guidance that was introduced in 2020 is recognised. I want to get matters resolved and our sport content back on air."

With Lineker writing on Twitter: "After a surreal few days, I’m delighted that we have navigated a way through this.

"I want to thank you all for the incredible support, particularly my colleagues at BBC Sport, for the remarkable show of solidarity. Football is a team game but their backing was overwhelming."

He added: "I’d like to thank Tim Davie for his understanding during this difficult period. He has an almost impossible job keeping everybody happy, particularly in the area of impartiality. I am delighted that we’ll continue to fight the good fight, together."
