Gary Lineker delighted at Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester stance amid Newcastle links

Brendan Rodgers has ruled out a potential move to Newcastle by insisting he is "100 per cent" committed to his job at Leicester – coming as music to the ears of Gary Lineker.

Rodgers and several other top coaches have been linked with the Newcastle post following their £300million Saudi takeover last week, which has cast doubt over Steve Bruce's position as manager at St James' Park.

Reports suggest Bruce, 60, could be moved on by the new Magpies owners as early as next week, with majority shareholder and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman keen to bring in an elite-level replacement.

It is believed Rodgers, who masterminded Leicester's FA Cup triumph last season, is one of several managerial targets for Bin Salman and co.

Yet fortunately for Foxes fans, the Northern Irishman insists he has no intention of walking away from his current job.

When asked if he will stay at Leicester, Rodgers said at a press conference on Friday: “100 per cent. I’ve got a contract until 2025, I absolutely love being here.

"I’m very fortunate; I’ve got a great chief executive who runs the club, a director of football who I have a close relationship with and a group of players that I really, really enjoy working with.

"We have an infrastructure here that allows us to look to compete. So for me, as long as they don't want to move me then I'm very happy being here at the club.

"I’ve seen all the reports around it. Of course it doesn’t help anyone, particularly Newcastle and Steve.

  • 7 former Premier League stars you didn't know became agents – including Deco and Kezman

"But it’s the type of week that I don’t like in the modern game. All the managers and coaches, we work hard to do the best for our teams and then we have speculation and gossip that goes around – it can destabilise supporters and players.

"It doesn't benefit anyone at all, but for me thankfully I’ve been in the game long enough now to just focus on my job, and I'm very happy here to do that.”
