Gabriel Agbonlahor ‘sure’ Man Utd will sign second player after Mason Mount

Mason Mount set for Man Utd move

Gabriel Agbonlahor is ‘sure’ Manchester United will sign a new striker this summer. The Red Devils made Mason Mount their first addition of the transfer window, with the playmaker arriving from Chelsea. More reinforcements are expected to follow over at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag looks to win the Premier League title at the second time of asking.

Manchester United unveiled Mount on Wednesday with the former Chelsea star set to wear the iconic No 7 shirt at Old Trafford.

And Agbonlahor, speaking to Football Insider, is ‘sure’ the Red Devils will land a new striker this summer as well.

“No, no chance,” he said when asked if United can get near the Premier League title without an established No 9.

“Rashford’s been outstanding, and you’d say he can do it again. Antony has been poor, so he’ll need to improve his numbers.

“But a striker has to be the top priority.

“They will get one, I’m sure. They’ve still got great pulling power.

“I’m sure by the time the season starts, they’ll have someone in place.

“You can’t rely on Fernandes and Rashford as the main goalscorers. You need someone clinical, and they always have done.

“Going back to the days of Van Nistelrooy, Cole, Van Persie, Rooney, Berbatov. They need a top number nine in that mould.”

United have been linked with a variety of strikers this summer.

They’re two short up top, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving in November and Wout Weghorst returning to Burnley.

And United know they can’t rely on Anthony Martial given his struggles for consistency over the past eight years.

Tottenham ‘will probably look to sell Harry Kane for £10m’ as Man Utd eye deal[LATEST]

Harry Kane is well-documented to be United’s first-choice target, despite the complexities involved in acquiring the Tottenham star.

Victor Osimhen is also admired, with the Nigeria international coming close to moving during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s spell in charge.

United like Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani, but Atalanta and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively want big money to part ways with their prized assets.

And the Red Devils have also been credited with an interest in the likes of Goncalo Ramos and Dusan Vlahovic as well.

In a separate interview with the same publication, meanwhile, Agbonlahor also expressed a belief Christian Eriksen would struggle in the aftermath of Mount’s arrival.

“If I’m honest, Eriksen didn’t do very well last season,” he said.

“He seemed like he lacked the legs and just couldn’t get the ball back as much as Ten Hag wanted.

“Especially in the games against Man City – I just thought he wasn’t good enough.

“They need legs – and Casemiro, Fernandes and Mount gives you that. Mount is more mobile, can score goals – and he fits in perfectly.

“I think he’ll definitely come in for Eriksen.

“I see Mount as a number eight, rather than playing out wide. I don’t think Eriksen has done enough to stay in that side.”

Mount himself said: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career.

“Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag.

“Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and I am ready for the hard work expected here.

“I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it.

“I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”
