Frenkie de Jong’s reply to question on Ten Hag phone call has Man Utd fans giddy

Manchester United fans have been left giddy after Frenkie de Jong seemingly refused to rule out a move to Old Trafford this summer.

The Barcelona midfielder, 25, tops United's summer wish-list with incoming manager Erik ten Hag ready to perform a mass exodus in an attempt to end the Red Devils' longest trophy drought in 40 years.

But without the promise of Champions League football, Man Utd are facing an uphill battle in trying to recruit new players. Daily Star Sport exclusively revealed that a bumper increase in wages will persuade De Jong to switch the Nou Camp for The Theatre of Dreams.

United chiefs are ready to make De Jong their highest-paid player with a whopping £395,000-a-week salary – and the midfield maestro refused to comment on if Ten Hag had been in contact regarding a summer move.

"Of course, I hear about the links to Manchester United, but the people in charge of Barca didn't tell me anything," he told Dutch outlet AD. "So then I will assume that there is no agreement, nothing to worry about. Contacts with Ten Hag? I won't tell you this."

The comments have sent social media into meltdown, with several United supporters believing a deal is close to being finalised. "Welcome to Manchester United Frenkie De Jong," commented one excited fan. "De Jong literally is the ball carrier/Pogba role. But he has a better anatomy built for football than Pogba has. Im so excited," posted another.

Whilst one supporter believes transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is not far off announcing the singing with his traditional 'here we go' notification. They posted: "the day fab tweets 'De Jong to United HERE WE GO' everyone is going crazy."

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Man Utd spend the bulk of their transfer budget on Frenkie de Jong? Let us know in the comments section.

The La Liga giants have slapped a £65m price tag on De Jong, which would command the bulk of United's £100m transfer budget and due to Barca's depleting finances there is little wriggle room on the transfer fee. The five-time Champions League winners are keen to recoup the full £65.3m they forked out for the 25-year-old just three years ago.

De Jong, though, is known to be content in Catalunya and is not seeking a move elsewhere – although the prospect of linking up with ex-manager Ten Hag is said to be an appealing prospect.

The Dutch wizard was an integral figure during Ajax's 2018 European run under Ten Hag, starring infamous victories over Real Madrid and Juventus.
