Frenkie de Jong makes Man Utd transfer U-turn leaving Barcelona chiefs ‘fuming’
Frenkie de Jong has performed a major U-turn by informing Erik ten Hag he wants to reunite with him at Manchester United, according to reports.
The Red Devils’ determinedly pursued the Barcelona midfielder in the summer, but their efforts repeatedly fell on deaf ears. It was a situation which grew quite embarrassing for a United side who eventually signed Christian Eriksen and £60million midfield ace Casemiro from Real Madrid.
De Jong broke onto the scene while playing under Ten Hag for Ajax, playing a starring role in the Amsterdam side’s run to the Champions League semi-final. However, he is now reportedly interested in playing under the fierce Dutchman once again.

Reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes claims De Jong and Ten Hag have both had conversations over the phone about a potential move in the future. At times, Barcelona appeared perfectly willing to move the midfielder on to United, but De Jong was less willing due to allegedly being owed around £14m in deferred payments.
Nevertheless, De Jong was determined to remain at the Nou Camp and has appeared in 14 of Barcelona’s 15 La Liga matches this season. When pushed about being linked with United and Chelsea in the summer, De Jong made it abundantly clear that he was not swayed by any advances.

“Chelsea and Man United interest? I already decided in May that I wanted to stay at Barcelona,” De Jong said last summer. “I never changed this decision during the summer.”
Fichajes have also claimed De Jong’s purported phone call with Ten Hag has angered Barcelona bosses. Their frustration is believed to stem from the fact that he would not budge from his position when their financial situation was at its most perilous.
De Jong may be interested in wearing red, but the likelihood of United signing him during the January transfer window appears slim. United’s focus is firmly set in finding a new striker to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Various reports have also claimed they will be limited to loan signings this month, after spending £220m in the summer transfer window. United have been linked with a short term loan move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Joao Felix.
