Fred ‘does a Cantona’ as Man Utd ace nets audacious chip against Liverpool

Fred has been compared to Eric Cantona after the Manchester United ace netted an audacious chip against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Brazilian midfielder grabbed the Red Devils' second goal as they raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. Fred took advantage of a mix-up in Liverpool defence, with the ball falling to him on the edge of the box with Alisson stranded around six yards from his goal.

As a result, the Liverpool keeper was only able to watch on as the ball was lifted over him by Fred's first-time chipped finish.

One fan even compared the goal to Cantona's iconic 1996 chipped goal against Sunderland as they tweeted: “Fred doing a Cantona in a friendly against Liverpool is likely to be one of the few I'll enjoy this coming season.”

Another supporter added: “That Fred goal was beautiful, that's all I'm finna say.” A third also wrote: “That Fred goal is something to rewatch.”

“Fred doesn’t do average goals,” commented another United fan. One more also wrote: “Fred’s goal is such a beauty.”

Fred has scored eight times for United across his 156 competitive appearances for the club since signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2018.

His goal on Tuesday in Thailand came after some United fans had been left in despair after seeing that Erik ten Hag had selected Fred and Scott McTominay together in midfield. However, those fans were made to eat their words after the Brazilian's stunning goal.

United had taken an early lead in the Thai capital, with Jadon Sancho putting Ten Hag's side in front just 12 minutes into his first pre-season friendly as boss.

The Liverpool defence were unable to clear a cross from Bruno Fernandes, with Sancho capitalising by drilling a low shot beyond Alisson and into the bottom corner.

Anthony Martial later completed the first half scoring by adding a third just three minutes after Fred's goal. The French forward, who has just returned from a loan spell with Sevilla, dinked the ball over Alisson after running through one-on-one with the keeper.
