Manchester United weren't just dumped out of the Europa League by Sevilla – they were thrown out and had the door slammed behind them for good measure.

Sevilla played up to the fanatic atmosphere at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium as United crumbled under the bright lights. David de Gea and Harry Maguire's early mix-up handed Sevilla their first, and they never recovered.

The Spanish side grabbed a second moments into the second-half, and De Gea had another shocker to gift Sevilla their third. And as United are left to lick their wounds Daily Star Sport looks at what Ten Hag got wrong…

    Failing to kill the atmosphere

There are few stadiums that can truly feel like a cauldron – but Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, on a warm spring evening, is certainly one of those.

And when United took to the field on Thursday evening, they were immediately engulfed by the atmosphere, where the blue touch paper was lit from the off. Sevilla fans were on the back of the United players – and they crumbled under the pressure.

United couldn't take the sting out of the game, and the crowd, with the early goal stemming from the atmosphere.

    The Jadon Sancho dilemma

Jadon Sancho arrived at the Red Devils with all the hype – and the track record to back it up – of England's next megastar, but he's struggled to set the world alight for the Reds.

It's approaching two years since Sancho first signed for United, and fans slammed his performance again on Thursday evening. United fans have begged on Twitter to give youngsters a chance instead of Rashford, with Facundo Pellistri sat on the bench.

Sancho was hooked early in the second half for a returning Marcus Rashford.

    Lack of discipline

United started off slow, and after falling behind early on, United heads started to drop – and small fouls started to seep into their game.

Marcel Sabitzer scythed down one Sevilla player, while Antony was booked for a petulant kick out at Acuna – and the Brazilian even sarcastically shook the referee's hand. Casemiro was also in the book for a professional foul.

As the game went on, United got more and more frustrated – it wasn't until past the hour mark the Red Devils even mustered an attempt of note, when Wout Weghorst's shot was blocked.

    Not starting Fred

Fred has silently been one of the Red Devils' best players this season, and his excellent performance in the first leg rewarded him with a spot on the bench.

By the time the Brazilian was introduced to the field, his two-goal salvo in Manchester seemed a long time ago. Instead of the Brazilian, Ten Hag had opted for Sabitzer, Casemiro, and Cristian Eriksen – with the trio all being largely static.

Fred did offer some more energy to the midfield, but it was too little too late – with Sevilla already in complete control of the tie.
