Shaun Wright-Phillips has been reduced to tears after his son put in a Man of the Match performance on his Championship debut with Stoke City.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips was the star of the show in the Potters 2-0 triumph over Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Sunday as he follows in the famous footsteps of his father and grandfather before him.

Shaun carved out a successful career, which included spells at Chelsea and Man City, having seen his father, the iconic Ian Wright, achieve fame whilst at Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Now, the baton has been passed to the next generation in D'Margio who, on his first league start with Stoke, reduced his father to tears.

Taking to social media, Shaun declared: "My eyes filled up watching him play on Sky, and then he goes and gets #MOTM and that blasted made me cry!"

After starring in the Potters' 2-0 FA Cup win over League Two outfit Leyton Orient last weekend, D'Margio was awarded with his first start on Sunday and he didn't disappoint.

The 20-year-old, who learned his trade in Manchester City's prestigious academy, played 72 minutes, scooping the Man of the Match award in the process.

It's been quite the week for the youngster, whose professional debut against the O's last Saturday was deemed the proudest achievement of his father Shaun's career.

The former Premier League ace posted last week: "Proud is beyond an understatement. I've been blessed to play for some amazing teams and represent my country at the very highest level.

"But yesterday afternoon, I witnessed my son make his professional debut, and this I am most proud of."

He added: "Keep grounded son, keep working hard and strive to be the best version of yourself possible.

"But what ever chapters lie ahead, you can be extremely proud of what you have already achieved, because I am."

Shaun himself made 316 Premier League appearances across spells with Chelsea, City and QPR, netting 32 times after following in his father into football.

Shaun's brother – and D'Margio's uncle – Bradley Wright-Phillips is also a professional footballer, who most recently featured for Columbus Crew in the MLS.
