Forlan was forced to play Man Utd game without top on after celebrating goal

Diego Forlan once played over a minute for Manchester United without a shirt after he failed to put his top back on after scoring.

The Uruguayan infamously went 23 games without finding the net – and he was overcome with emotion when he finally scored. Forlan buried the ball into the back of the net from outside the area, and he promptly removed his shirt in celebration.

However, United’s new Nike jerseys had an integrated base layer into the design, and Forlan couldn't get the shirt on. Instead of taking time out, to put the shirt back on, he continued, topless.

Forlan said after the goal: "The goal that I scored on Saturday was one of the best ones that I have done in my career. First of all, because I was on the pitch for only a few minutes, second because it was a nice goal and third because it gave victory to my team.

"I went to the corner where the parents of the players always are and I dedicated my goal to my brother, a friend nicknamed Bata and an English friend that I have had since I arrived here.

"The only problem that I had with my celebration was that I took my jersey off and then I couldn't get back on. I wanted to do it but I had to keep on playing and I couldn't get it on."

Forlan managed to help his side without a top on as he tackled James Beattie – to a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crown.

With the ball safely in the keepers' hands, Forlan was finally able to get his top back on – with the help of three members of the red Devils' backroom staff.
