Football manager has taken charge of 40 teams in 37 years but keeps getting jobs

A journeyman football manager has sensationally taken charge of 40 football teams in just 37 years but somehow still keeps on getting new jobs.

Gheorghe Multescu, 70, was last employed by Romanian giants Dinamo Bucharesti for the end of the 2020/21 campaign but was relieved of his duties after aiding the club to Liga I survival. Multescu has remarkably been employed by Dinamo Bucharesti on five separate occasions having first been appointed to the role in 1990.

But after completing the double in the 1989/90 season, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the now-disbanded UEFA Cup Winners Cup, Multescu could only lead The Red Dogs to a third-place finish.

He didn't even finish the campaign – the former Romanian international lasted up until May but was axed following a five-match winless run, including a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Steaua Bucharest. Of the five times Multescu has been employed by Dinamo Bucharesti, he has never seen out the season.

Mainly spending his entire career in Romania, Multescu has been nicknamed Smurdul – after the Romanian emergency services – due to taking the reins at clubs in danger of relegation and helping them avoid the drop.

But despite a prolonged stint in his homeland, Multescu's only managerial triumph came from a four-year stint in Turkey with Samsunspor. The veteran boss lead The Red Lightning to Balkans Cup glory in its final year – the international competition for clubs from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia was abolished in 1994.

Enjoying a prolonged managerial career, Multescu was far more successful as a player. He racked up more than 450 appearances as a midfielder in the Romanian first division after making his senior debut in 1971 and was capped by his country on 16 occasions.

A three-time Divizia A champion, before the league was re-branded as Liga I for the 2006/07 campaign, Multescu also claimed the Romanian Cup in 1982 and 1984 before being employed as player-manager at Jiul Petroșani and leading them to the Divizia B title.
